SSP Partners begin rainfall monitoring

In support of Project Rain Gauge, Smart Schools Program (SSP) partner schools are taking the lead in local weather reporting by monitoring and recording the amount and rate of rainfall in their areas using improvised rain gauges. The project test group, which consists of 17 SSP partner schools, reports rainfall observations on a weekly basis through the Project Rain Gauge website.

The Project Rain Gauge, a joint initiative of Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) and Manila Observatory’s KLIMA Climate Change Center, in cooperation with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Department of Education, aims to create a network of ground stations across the country via Smart Schools to provide supplementary data on local rainfall measurement in specific areas. The first phase of the Project Rain Gauge targets to train the 17 SSP schools which are located in disaster-prone areas.

Teacher-representatives of the 17 SSP partner schools were trained by the Project Rain Gauge to implement and sustain rain gauge reading, and data collection and recording in their respective areas. The teachers, together with their students, have taken the initiative to improvise and install their own rain gauges in their schools. By engaging more SSP partners in the future, the rainfall data recorded by the schools will be very valuable in determining fine-scale rainfall patterns necessary to describe local climate, and weather reporting and forecasting in local communities will be more accurate.

The 17 pilot schools are the following:

Sagada National High School (Sagada, Mt. Province)
Baguio City National High School (Baguio City, Benguet)
